I know, I know, it’s been a LONG time. Sorry :(. A lot of new and big things have been happening around here, all of which Chris will brief you on soon…
But in the midst of lots of happy, exciting times, there was one very sad moment keeping us from the blogosphere: my grandmother (also lovingly known as “Patah”) passed away last weekend after living 89 years filled with joy, happiness, and lots of love.
Patah was the greatest granny a girl could ask for; she somehow knew exactly how to cheer my brother and I (her only grandkids) up, no matter how sad, angry, or (as was usually the case with me) overly-dramatic we were feeling. Some of my favorite childhood memories are of “sleepovers”, movie nights, and endless games of Chinese checkers with her.
After the funeral events last week I came across this old photo of her on her wedding day (to the love of her life, my grandfather Jack). Isn’t she gorgeous?
It’s hard to explain, but I think this photo completely epitomizes who she was: beautiful, graceful, with that comforting, gentle smile. You can even see the genuine kindness in her eyes – which never disappeared, even after her Alzheimer’s disease ran its full course.
It’s always sad to say goodbye to the people you love most, but I’m comforted knowing that the life Patah lived was the best kind: one lived to its absolute fullest, surrounded by those who loved her. If anything, the past few weeks have reminded me that those are the only things that really matter, in the end.
